Covenant University expels 200 students for not attending Church service
About 200 students may
have been expelled by the authorities of Covenant University, Cannanland, Ota,
Ogun State, recently for what was described as “disregard of paramount core
values.”
Frustrated and angered
by the development, some of the affected students who gave account of what
happened battled emotions while narrating their situations to Saturday Vanguard
recently. They however pleaded with the school authorities to tamper justice
with mercy in order to save their future.
Saturday Vanguard investigation revealed that out of the figure, about 126 were expelled for not attending the ‘departure service’, meant to sign off from the school after the end of the Semester and Matriculation of students on November 30. Five other students were thrown out for smoking while unconfirmed source said additional 60 got the same fate for violating other rules bordering on the University’s core values. A few others were given four weeks suspension for failure to sign the head count that was conducted a couple of weeks earlier.
A letter of expulsion signed by the Registrar, Ntia Ubong, a copy which was made available to Saturday Vanguard stated that the affected students contravened Chapter 1, section 30, page 40 of the 2010-2014 Student Handbook.
We gathered that the massive expulsion was predicated on the anger of the Chancellor, Bishop David Oyedepo who was said to have been infuriated after seeing students loitering around when they were supposed to be at the Chapel for the Departure Service.
The Koko Concert tagged "Flopped and worst ever"; D'banj's provocative statement to the Regular/V.I.P attendees.
Ever since the much hyped "koko concert" sort of flopped, the internet has been agog with people especially the attendees, venting and expressing their irritation via twitter and other social networks. The event which took place at the Eko Atlantic City last Thursday, 27th December was hosted by Hollywood actor Idris Alba.
In the past weeks, the concert has enjoyed a lot
of hype in the media and was one of the most expensive musical concerts in the
country. Some fans paid as much as N1 million to attend the concert which also
has Hollywood actor Idris Elba; America rappers, Pusha T and Big Sean; as well
as Nigerian-born British rapper Tinnie Tempah; on parade.
Fans were particularly disappointed by Dbanj’s performance. Many of them who went to the concert hoping to hear him perform some of his popular tunes were heartbroken as the musician chose to perform his most recent tunes that many have problems relating to.
Tweets from angry fans below:
“Dbanj does not have any song to sing.. Terrible. Let tomorrow come first,” said a fan tweeting from the handle @RicDizZle.
“Sing Suddenly or Mogbonofelifeli if you know say e sure for you!” @RicDizZle continued referring to some the musician’s popular tunes.

Obama signs bill to grant Nigerian student U.S. permanent residency
Victor Chukwueke (second from the left) is shown with his
surgeon, Dr. Ian Jackson, the doctor's wife and the nun who has cared for him
since he came to the United States.
|
A Nigerian immigrant's dream came true when
President Barack Obama signed into law a rare private bill granting him
permanent residency in the Unites States.
Victor Chukwueke, who lives in Michigan on an
expired visa, came to the United States 11 years ago to undergo treatment for
massive face tumors.
He graduated from a university in the state, and
plans to attend an Ohio medical school that requires him to have permanent
residency, also known as a green card.
In a rare act, the United States Congress
passed a private bill this month granting him permanent residency. Obama signed
the bill Friday.
Private bills -- which only apply to one person
and mostly focus on immigration -- are rarely approved. His is the only one to
pass in Congress in two years.
"I was overwhelmed with joy; it was nothing
less than a miracle," the 26-year-old says. "Only in this country can
so many miraculous and wonderful things happen to someone like me."

Man Lives In Tree For Nine Months And Vows not To Come Down Until Wife Apologises For Cheating On Him
A sad and betrayed husband has been living in a tree for the last nine months, refusing to come
down until his wife apologises for cheating on him. But the apology never
came and, nine months later,Sanjay, 25, is still there,
wondering if wife Tara will ever take him back.
Sanjay, whose surname
is not known, married Tara last year in Ramgaon, Varanasi, before
moving to Mumbai.
But in March he
returned home from work a little early to find his new bride in a compromising
position with their next-door neighbour.
Hurt and humiliated,
he demanded an apology for the infidelity but she refused so he took her back
to their village in a bid to resolve their differences.
But she remained
defiant, saying she wanted to return to Mumbai before leaving for her parents
house.
So in a last ditch effort to win her back, Sanjay shimmied up a guava tree on the outskirts of the village and has remained there ever since.
Woman Fired For Being Too Sexy!
Melissa Nelson was fired for being too “irresistible” and a “threat” to her
employer’s marriage. How hilarious!
“I
think it is completely wrong,” Nelson said. “I think it is sending a message
that men can do whatever they want in the work force.”
On Friday, the all-male Iowa
State Supreme Court ruled that James Knight, Nelson’s boss, was within his
legal rights when he fired her, affirming the decision of a lower court.
“We do think the Iowa Supreme
Court got it completely right,” said Stuart Cochrane, an attorney for James
Knight. “Our position has always been Mrs. Nelson was never terminated because
of her gender, she was terminated because of concerns her behavior was not
appropriate in the workplace. She’s an attractive lady. Dr. Knight found her
behavior and dress to be inappropriate.”
For Nelson, a 32-year-old
married mother of two, the news of her firing and the rationale behind it came
as a shock.
Indian tea workers burn their boss and his wife to death
Tea
plantation workers torched the home of their boss, killing both him and his
wife, following a labour dispute in the northeastern Indian state of Assam,
officials said on Thursday.
Around 1,000 workers at the privately-owned M.K.B. Tea Estate attacked the plantation owner's bungalow on Wednesday and set it on fire in violence blamed on festering labour unrest in the tea-growing region, police said.
Mridul Bhattacharya and his wife Rita were burned to death as workers armed with home-made weapons prevented police from rescuing them, they said.
"The body of the planter was charred beyond recognition and reduced to ashes while the body of the wife was found lying in the kitchen," local police officer A. Das told AFP by telephone.
The grisly attack occurred in Assam's tea-growing Tinsukia district, some 500 kilometres (310 miles) east of the state's main city of Guwahati.

Update: How Obasanjo’s house was gutted by fire
Barely 20 minutes after Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria’s former President left his
Abeokuta Hilltop Mansion residence on Thursday, fire engulfed the building.
The house located in Abeokuta, the Ogun State Capital, was
gutted by fire on Thursday with extensive damages recorded in the 30-minute
incident
The fire, which started at about 4.25 p.m., was traced to
electricity power surge, just barely about twenty minutes after Mr. Obasanjo
left for his other house located in Ita-Eko area of the town.
PREMIUM TIMES gathered that the fire sparked from his private
office, a stone throw to his bedroom, before the security in the premises
raised alarm, and the state fire service were contacted.
The fire service, in a swift response, raced to the scene with
two fire fighting vehicles, to curtail the fire, which would have spread to
other apartments. However, a number of valuables were consumed by the fire.

prohibition or the other and we have men and women at our various entry and
exit points. How did they get in? How did they enter? Who imported them and who
cleared them? Who approved them to come in. Those are very serious issues we

have been more’ if he was required to perform with a live band or if he had to
do multiple venues or cities.
Although he performed with a DJ
and backing track, with two back-up singers and four dancers, he gave a good
account of himself, treating fans to almost two hours of a well-planned set
that left guests asking for more.
Chris Brown’s tour will
continue early next year with a scheduled performance in Cote D’Ivoire.
