Over 500 buildings and 10 cars were were damaged by a heavy
rainstorm yesterday morning in different parts of Lagos State.
The rain which began at about 8am and lasted less than an
hour left thousands of residents homeless as
roofs of residential buildings, churches, mosques and schools were blown
away.
Over 500 buildings were affected at Ijaiye Street in Ajegunle
area of the metropolis including Ajeromi Public Primary School while part of
the roof of the three-storey building housing Christ The King Primary School,
Orodu Street, Ajegunle was also affected.
Worshipers at the Redeemed Christian Church of God at Queens
Street, Ajegunle said they escaped death by the whiskers as the roof almost
collapsed on their heads. Also affected was Gospel Baptist Church, along Oregie
Road and Redeemers Kingdom Church, Kanjowon Street, all in Ajegunle.
At Ebute Meta West, around Apapa Road, one of the roofs fell
on some vehicles parked in the premises of Obadare Church, Olokodana while 10
vehicles including two sports utility vehicles were destroyed at Osholake,
Ondo, Abeokuta and Tapa Streets in the area.
At Oyingbo area several buildings including the police
barracks were affected while Amukoko and Ijora seemed to be the worst hit.
Detached electricity cables littered some streets in the
area. The residents in such areas have appealed to the electricity distribution
companies to act fast as the presence of the cables constituted a threat to
their lives.
Spokesperson, for National Emergency Management Agency,
NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, who confirmed
the incident, said the agency was assessing the damage and would come up with
relief packages.
