Fuel Price Hike: NLC, TUC, to go ahead with strike despite court order



Despite an order of the National Industrial Court restraining the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress from going ahead with their planned strike to protest the hike in price of petrol, the strike will go ahead as planned on Wednesday, labour officials have said.

The General Secretary of the NLC, Peter Ozo-Eson, on Tuesday night told PREMIUM TIMES that from all indications the strike would go on as planned.
On the meeting with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, earlier convened to attempt to broker a last minute truce on the matter, Mr. Ozo-Eson said the meeting was yet to hold at about 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Industrial Court Restrains Nigeria Labor Congress From Going On Strike



The President of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Justice Babatunde Adeniran Ademjumo today granted an interim order restraining the Nigeria Labor Congress from embarking on indefinite strike slated for tomorrow to protest a hike in the price of petrol.

Presiding over lawsuit No.NICN/ABJ/179/2016 between Federal Government of Nigeria and the Nigeria Labor Congress and Trade Union Congress the judge granted an interim order of injunction restraining the Defendants/Respondents, their agents, privies, employees, workmen, or servants from embarking on industrial action, demonstrating or engaging in any action that may disrupt the economic activities of Nigeria pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.
The Federal Government was represented by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN; Okoi Obono Obla, Special Assistant to the President on Prosecution, and Dayo Apata, Director of Civil Litigation at the Federal Ministry of Justice.

JUST IN: I was under serious influence during Tinubu’s trial - CCT judge




Danladi Umar, chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), on Tuesday, said that he was under “serious” influence in the trial of Bola Tinubu, former governor of Lagos state and national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He, however, added that despite the “influence” he was able to deliver justice in the case.
Tinubu was tried at the tribunal in 2011 for allegedly operating foreign accounts while he was governor between 1999 and 2007, but he was discharged and acquitted.
Speaking as the trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki resumed, Umar also directed the defence counsel to restrict the number of lawyers who would cross-examine the prosecution witness to just one.
He said that the conduct of the cross-examination had been untidy with the frequent change of lawyers by the defence team.

24-year old nursing mother, Yewande Busari was killed when an electric wire fell on her as she was crossing the ever busy Oshodi express way on May 6th. Yewande was carrying her baby Pamilerin on her back, fortunately he survived the electrocution.
According to Sahara reporters, the streetlight pole that caused the tragedy was said to have been left unattended by PHCN officials at the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company.

N145 pump price: FG, Labor meeting ends in deadlock, to continue today



The meeting between the Federal government and organized labor over the planned strike against the recently increased pump price of petrol, ended in a deadlock yesterday night and will continue today May 17th.

At the meeting, Labor leaders insisted that the only way the planned strike action will be shelved is for the Federal government to review the minimum wage upwards, improve the palliatives to cushion the effects of the fuel price hike on Nigerians and reconstitution of the board of the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA).‎

An Ikeja Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a scrap collector, Nurudeen Oriyomi, to 13 years’ imprisonment without the option of fine for raping a 12-year-old pupil, Ngozi (pseudonym) in the Bariga area of Lagos State.

The magistrate, Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi, delivered the judgment after the convict pleaded guilty to two counts bordering on rape preferred against him by a police prosecutor, Inspector S. Imhonwa.
PUNCH Metro had reported that Oriyomi had forcefully slept with his victim on April 9, 2016, on Alhaji Yinusa Street.
The victim, whose mother had travelled at the time, was said to be running an errand for her grandmother, when the Ilorin, Kwara State indigene forced her inside his room and raped her.

I Regret Not Privatising NNPC - Olusegun Obasanjo



Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday expressed regret for not privatising the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) while in office.

Obasanjo, who spoke in Lagos, advised the Federal Government to allow the organised private sector play a critical role in repositioning the nation’s moribund assets and infrastructure.
According to Obasanjo, past experience in Nigeria has shown that the private sector when given the opportunity can contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of the nation on a sustainable basis.
He said that he regretted not privatising the NNPC, noting that the organised private sector had repositioned the nation’s telecommunications industry by creating jobs and paying money to the government on a sustainable basis.

Cameron makes u-turn, praises Nigeria’s fight against corruption



British Prime Minister David Cameron Wednesday attempted to reverse his unguarded remark about Nigeria and Afghanistan, two countries which on Tuesday, he, described as “fantastically corrupt”, when he was briefing Queen Elizabeth II on the ongoing anti-corruption summit being hosted by the United Kingdom.

While briefing Members of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons Wednesday, the British PM said Nigeria and Afghanistan had taken “remarkable steps forward” on corruption, reported the BBC.
The PM said the countries’ leaders were “battling hard” to tackle the problem.
His attempt at a mea culpa came after Buhari, who arrived London on Tuesday evening for the summit, said Cameron’s gaffe was not reflective of his administration’s fight against corruption.

Detained suspected wife-killer,Lekan Shonde on hunger strike



Detained suspected wife-killer Lekan Shonde is on hunger strike, The Nation reports.
He has refused to eat since his arrival at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) at Panti, Yaba, Lagos Mainland, on Monday.
Shonde was alleged to have beaten his wife, Ronke, to death last Thursday at their Egbeda, Lagos home. He reportedly locked their two kids with the body in the house and fled.

The kids, Temioluwa and Tiaraoluwa, have been taken to Kwara State to stay with their grandmother.
Meanwhile, the deceased’s alleged lover, has remained silent despite being accused by Shonde of wrecking his home.

NANS vows to shut down all campuses, occupy Nigeria over N145 petrol price



The Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Thursday said the over 40 million Nigerian students would re-enact the Occupy Nigeria protest against the removal of subsidy from petroleum product next week. 
According to Vanguard, the National President of NANs, Comrade Tijani Shehu, stated this in Abuja, at a protest rally where the association called for the removal of the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu.
 He said NANS is already mobilizing Nigerias students to resist the new N145 per litre pump price of the Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, otherwise called petrol. According to him,

Police arrest six suspected homosexuals in Edo(Photo)



The Nigeria Police have arrested six men for allegedly engaging in acts of homosexuality in different areas within Benin, the Edo State capital.
The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 5, AIG Musa Daura, who paraded the suspects on Thursday, said that they were arrested on May 9, 2016, by operatives of the zonal anti-vice section.
Daura listed the suspects to include Festus Osagiede (24), Hyacinth Imahanrebhor (20), Itama Omon (25), Onwukwe Prince (28), Monye Chukwuma (23) and Osadebe Kelvin‎ (26), adding they confessed to have been committing the crime since 2006.
According to him, one of them, Osagiede, said to be the leader of the gang, first committed the crime when he had carnal knowledge ‎of the third suspect after attending a Benin night club in 2006.
“After the third suspect (Itama) got drunk, Festus Osagiede took him to his house and forcefully had carnal knowledge of him.
“Since then, they have been committing the crime with others at large until May, 2016, when luck ran out of them and they swooped on by zonal detectives,” Daura said.

Brazilian President, Dilma Rousseff, suspended for ‘lying about country’s budget’


The Brazilian senate has suspended President Dilma Rousseff.
The senators voted 55 to 22 to suspend the president to allow for her trial over allegations she broke the country’s budget laws.

President Rousseff is facing impeachment for allegedly lying about the country’s budget, to hide deficits.
Her salary, residency and security will remain suspended during the trial.

A Suicide bombing at a government compound in Nigeria’s northeastern city of Maiduguri killed at least four people on Thursday, residents said.

Rescue workers were seen carrying four bodies away.
The attack in the city centre bore the hallmark of the jihadist group, Boko Haram, which has been waging an insurgency in the north for seven years.
It was the second suicide bombing attack in 12 hours.

Senate seeks death penalty for kidnappers



In a bid to curb the incessant cases of kidnapping, the Senate yesterday resolved to enact a legislation prescribing  the death penalty for kidnappers.
Senators were outraged that kidnapping and hostage-taking, which used to be contained in the Southsouth and Southeast, was  becoming widespread.
Senator Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), who spoke, proposed that the National Assembly should enact a law prescribing the death penalty for kidnappers.

I survived on water for 7 days-Former minister Anisulowo recounts ordeal with abductors



Former Minister of State for Education, Senator Iyabo Anisulowo, has narrated her experience during her seven-day ordeal in the hands of her abductors.
Speaking to journalists after she arrived the Government House, Abeokuta, Ogun State on Tuesday night, Anisulowo said she survived solely on water, adding that she did not eat throughout the seven days of her captivity.
She said 

 “I’ve been on water, I did not eat anything throughout. “I’m short of words, but I want to thank the governor and also thank God. I want to thank His Excellency for all the efforts you have put in with the security agents.

“I know the courage you have and the spirit to fight to the end and that was what kept me alive in the bush. I had the assurance that with the security agents that you have, you will work it through, so I thank God.”
‎The governor disclosed that the kidnappers raised her ransom from N100 million to N200 million because of his involvement  and said the leaders of the kidnapping gang abused him “thoroughly” on the telephone in a conversation he had with them ...

Outrage over picture of three-year-old boy allegedly 'snorting cocaine'



A three-year-old boy was seemingly photographed snorting cocaine, with the image then uploaded onto Facebook.
The image was uploaded onto social media with the caption:

"Mum and dad’s little junkie".

It shows him looking directly into the camera, ready to sniff a white, powdery substance.
Social media users demanded that the child should be taken into care.

However the family, from the small village of Sindel in eastern Bulgaria’s Varna Province, assured users it was just a joke.Nadezhda Nuri, the boy’s mother, told local media that the substance was not cocaine, but instead was simply flour.
According to Daily Record, She claims that the image was taken as a joke but then uploaded onto social media by her 13-year-old daughter.

Indonesian villagers thought they had been blessed by an angel fallen from heaven when a beautiful doll washed up on a beach – only to discover it was an inflatable sex toy.Reports of a heavenly offering spread like wildfire through the community, prompting fears of social unrest.

Villager Pardin, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, found the doll when he was fishing off the remote Banggai islands off Sulawesi in central Indonesia.
The discovery in March came a day after a solar eclipse swept across the area, a deeply spiritual experience in the world's most populous Muslim-majority country.

Police rescue abducted ex-minister, Anisulowo



 A former Minister of State for Education, Senator Iyabo Anisulowo, who was kidnapped by gunmen last Wednesday, has been rescued.

Her rescue comes hours after the Ogun State Police Command promised to pay a N5m reward to any informant who can offer useful information that will help security operatives free her.
